![]() ![]() He very very reluctantly let me borrow his "lucky" magnet which was tied to some line and an old piece of driftwood. So, I then found a harbor maintenance guy and told him my sad story. Not even close to holding up the bearing. I ripped the speaker apart and tied the magnet to a line and fished for an hour before I tested the magnet on the other main bearing. #Dockmate float drums installation drivers#Having no magnet and not to be deterred in any way I pulled the drivers door speaker out of my 19 because if you have to have only one speaker it needs to be in the passenger door. So I figured a magnet and some line and I would sit on the dock with hours in hand and fish for the thing on the bottom. It was close to slack tide so I figured the thing was pretty much straight down. I knew the bearing dropped into the water in a 24" x 24" area next to the boat. Well needless to say I was dumbfounded and disbelieving in the extreme but reality set in a few moments later and rather than get angry I had a safety meeting and pondered my options which weren't many considering the age of the winches. I was being what I thought was anally careful when the main bearing popped up in the air all by itself I swear and then went "blurp" into the harbor. I was rebuilding these old barlow winches with the boat at the dock. Not recommended to go to Customs House for a drink with no shoes and I refused to wear sea boots to the pub. No point in carrying all that weight to Hobart for nothing!!!' Thinking he may have had a matching lost left shoe I handed it to him.I looked on in horror as he tossed it over the side saying, 'Well, you wont be needing that one. Skipper looked at me and smiled, and said 'Let me have a look at the other one' Tack worked ok, but shoe slipped out the back with a very loud splash!!Īfter rounding the sea mark, we settled in for a nice run. Just after the start of a Syd-Hobart we had to do a crash tack and one of my deck shoes slipped off as I dived for the leeward sheet. Safer that way!!Ī few days later we were talking to a British couple who were in the same bay that afternoon. Mrs Leka helped the next time, but we mostly left it on the dinghy after that. ![]() Many $$ later and diver recovers OB and local mech has it running again. Power boat comes past just as I was about to take the final step onto the dinghy with OB in hand. On charter in Seychelles and trying to be a hero and put the OB on the dinghy from the stern rail mount on my own. A few sunglasses, winch handles and a few bits of string, but only thing of real value was an outboard. ![]()
